The development of New Star's UK institutional business is one of the key objectives for the senior management team.

John Duffield founded Jupiter Asset Management in 1985 and built it into one of the UK's most successful retail fund management businesses. Within 15 years, Jupiter's funds under management grew to £14 billion and the company attracted approximately one million investment accounts. In the five years before John left Jupiter in 2000 it received more than 100 investment awards.

Howard Covington joined New Star as a non-executive director in August 2000, becoming chief executive in January 2001. Previously he was chief executive of the European investment banking business of Wasserstein Perella from 1996 to 2001. Prior to this he was a director of SG Warburg, where he was a corporate financier for 10 years.

Rupert Ruvigny joined New Star in October 2000. Previously he was deputy chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers' financial services regulatory practice. He qualified as a chartered accountant with Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) in 1984. He was made a partner in 1992 and specialised in asset management and regulation. He was seconded to IMRO (superceded by the Financial Services Authority) initially as head of investigations and subsequently as director of monitoring.
