New Star is a young fund management company staffed by some of the most experienced and talented people within the UK fund management industry. We are passionate about offering our clients outstanding investment returns.
As a young company, we have been able to design a range of services to meet the needs of today's institutional clients, unconstrained by the baggage of the past, traditional products and services and out-dated attitudes to portfolio management. New Star has grown to be a significant player in the fund management industry since its establishment in 2000. Its business extends from institutional investors to retail funds and private client fund management while its wide range of investment capabilities includes equity and bond management, property and hedge funds. It employs more than 350 staff, 85 of whom are investment professionals (at 31 July 2008). Assets under management were approximately £19.8 billion at 30 June 2008. Approximately 40% of these assets were managed on behalf of institutions.
As we have built our business, we have focused on recruiting fund managers with outstanding long-term performance track records. We have created an environment in which they are encouraged to be independently-minded in their investment decision-making, unconstrained by over-engineered processes or fears of straying from the crowd. The reason they hold a stock is a conviction that it will do well in real terms, not just relative to an index, and they take personal responsibility for each investment. Our fund managers recognise, however, that the best ideas are generated in the open debate that takes place within a team environment although ultimately decisions are best taken by individuals.
We also aim to set new standards in service levels with our investors. This involves communicating simply and clearly with clients and their advisers about investment decisions, in bad times as well as good.
Most of New Star's full-time employees are shareholders in the firm. Our success is wholly dependent on our clients' long-term satisfaction with the investment performance we achieve on their behalf and the service we provide them.
