Star players in a winning business environment - that's what New Star stands for.
New Star is a broadly-diversified, well-capitalised investment management company committed to offering investors superior performance. Founded in June 2000, the company has built its funds under management to approximately £19.1 billion* with clients across Europe, North America and Asia.
New Star was created by John Duffield, whose track record speaks for itself. As the founder of Jupiter Asset Management, he built one of the UK's leading investment management businesses, with an average 64% per annum growth in funds under management between 1985 and 1999. He left Jupiter in the spring of 2000.
New Star's success has been based on the core belief that active management delivers the best long-term returns. A distinctive stock picking approach seeking to generate alpha is central to New Star's investment ethos. It has focused on creating a culture in which star fund managers are encouraged to be independent-minded in their investment decision-making. The company believes that proven fund managers should have the freedom to back their own judgment, subject always to rigorous monitoring and control.
New Star is backed by some of the world's leading institutions and private investors. Its objective has been to develop through organic growth and significant acquisitions. The first acquisition was made in December 2000 when New Star acquired WorldInvest, a London-based global investment manager, now renamed New Star Institutional Managers.
Since then, the company has passed a series of significant milestones. In July 2001 its first retail products were launched into the market to widespread acclaim. Setting what is believed to be a UK record for an open-ended funds launch, the company raised in excess of £250 million during the three-week offer period for the two funds, European Growth and UK Growth.
In a programme designed to attain critical mass in retail fund management, New Star made three further acquisitions during 2003. Contracts to manage fixed income, equity income and technology funds were purchased from Aberdeen Asset Management; funds investing in investment trust shares were bought from Exeter Investment Group; and contracts to run retail funds formerly managed by Edinburgh Fund Managers were purchased to broaden the range of international funds and take New Star into funds of funds.
By summer 2006, five years after the foundation of New Star's retail business, onshore retail funds under management had risen to more than £8 billion#. New Star is now one of the UK's largest independent retail fund management groups and is among the top 20 retail fund management groups in the country.
In the international market, New Star now offers a broad range of mutual funds registered for sale across Europe and Asia. In the retail area, the company has launched seven equity funds and two fixed income funds as well as a global managed fund of New Star funds. In the hedge fund sector, New Star has launched a range of regional, sector and country funds as well as managed funds of New Star hedge funds and investable index fund.
Outside retail fund management, 2004 and 2005 were years of significant growth for New Star Institutional Managers, which won a series of mandates from high-profile North American public and private sector clients as well as leading international financial institutions.
By September 2008, New Star employed 403 staff, of whom 87** were investment professionals, and it had offices in London, Dublin, Madrid, Zurich, Bermuda and Hong Kong. The equity ownership has been arranged so that all staff share in New Star's success. New Star targets staff who wish to be part of a young and dynamic business and it has a work-hard philosophy at the heart of its corporate culture.
In November 2005, as part of its development programme, New Star Asset Management Group PLC, parent company of New Star Asset Management, gained a quotation for its shares on the Alternative Investment Market, the London Stock Exchange's global market for growing companies and then went on to obtain a full listing on the London Stock Exchange in June 2007.
